Cincinnati prepares to lay FAO Daryl Gordon to rest
Visitation scheduled Tuesday, funeral Wednesday
The extensive planning for a firefighter바카라 게임 웹사이트s funeral Wednesday is pretty much nonstop.
It바카라 게임 웹사이트s anticipated thousands will pay tribute to Fire Apparatus Operator Daryl Gordon, who died last week after falling down an elevator shaft during a rescue at the King Towers apartments in Madisonville.
Through the past several days, Cincinnati firefighters have used Local 48 union headquarters in Queensgate as a place to gather and decompress before Tuesday's visitation and Wednesday's funeral service.
Schedule of events for FAO Daryl Gordon's funeral
Fire department leaders met with local media Monday morning to review logistics and the processional route.
A friend of Daryl Gordon's family contacted the Archdiocese to secure St. Peter-In-Chains Cathedral. A deacon will preside over a non-denominational service there.
The planning involves 50 to 100 people and covers every aspect of the tradition-laden day, from the ceremonial honor guard to the basic details.
"Rides for the family to get them here, the staging of all the equipment, the processionals, what will go on in the church,바카라 게임 웹사이트 Fire Chief Richard Braun said.
Firefighters said they're preparing in Covington as well.
Firefighter Jimmy Adams said he has been to about 30 firefighter funerals in his 25-year career.
Covington will cover for Engine 14 all day Wednesday so Gordon's company can be at the service and at graveside. Covington's last line-of-duty death was 70 years ago.
"We have guys on the job that knew him, we have guys on the job that didn't,바카라 게임 웹사이트 Adams said. 바카라 게임 웹사이트But, pretty much everybody is united in wanting to do the right thing and remember him in doing what we can to help Cincinnati go through this tough time."
Between Monday and Wednesday, Braun has arguably the longest checklist in the city for a ceremony rich in tradition.
Matt Alter, president of Local 48 union said, "The pressure is all internal. We want to make sure that we do right by Daryl."
Monday, just as last Friday inside Gordon's engine company, the mood remained somber and reflective.
Gordon's on-duty death is the first in Cincinnati since 2003.
"Firefighters always know that they work in this situation,바카라 게임 웹사이트 Braun said. 바카라 게임 웹사이트And so, you put it to the back of your mind. You know, it's back here, I don't think about it, but when something like this happens, it comes to the forefront."
Daryl Gordon understood the bond fire departments honor and carry with them.
His funeral will be further testament to that connecting tissue.
"When Cincinnati experienced this line of duty death, we immediately reached out to them and said what can we do for you?바카라 게임 웹사이트 Capt. Steve Conn of the Colerain Township Fire Department said.
Columbus is sending 200 of its firefighters as well as its entire executive staff.
Braun was part of the Columbus department for 37 years and is professionally and personally moved by the gesture.
He recalled being in Cincinnati 12 years ago when firefighter Oscar Armstrong died in the line of duty.
"When we came down for Oscar, it was very strange to me. As we were in the processional, we're going by Cincinnati fire stations and I'm seeing my Columbus firefighters standing and saluting outside."
The close connection between the two big city departments reaches all the way to softball diamond bragging rights. So, when a mayday becomes a funeral plan, one department is always there for the other.
"It just shows the brotherhood and sisterhood we have and the continuity we have,바카라 게임 웹사이트 Braun said.
Daryl Gordon knew the daily drill and daily demands of a high-risk career of service to community.
On Wednesday, his fellow firefighters will stand in tribute to him and to the territory he so ably served.
