Friday, June 19, 2015, 9 a.m.: A man calls 911 twice to report another man with a gun in his waistband at the corner of Roe Street and Whetsel Avenue in Madisonville.

Officer Sonny Kim is the first officer on the scene. The suspect fires several shots at Kim, striking him multiple times.

Kim falls to the ground and the suspect wrestles with Kim and takes his service weapon.

A Hamilton County probation officer arrives at the scene and fires several shots at the suspect, hitting him.

Officers at the scene perform CPR on Kim before an ambulance takes him and the suspect to UC Medical Center.

Kim and the suspect are pronounced dead at the hospital before 11:30 a.m.

Kim graduates from the police academy and is promoted to the rank of police officer in May 1988. After spending a year in District 4, he is transferred to District 2.

The 27-year-veteran police officer receives 22 commendations during his career, most recently in 2013.

Kim is the first police officer to die in the line of duty since Officer Kevin Crayon was killed in 2000.

Community members leave flowers in Kim's honor at the Greater Cincinnati Police Memorial across the street from District 1 Headquarters.

Officers from Mason, Norwood and several others across the Greater Cincinnati area announce plans to take part in Kim's funeral procession. Other officers from departments in Chicago, New York City, California, Florida and Connecticut plan to attend the services.

At least 200 police motorcycles and at least 500 police cars are expected Kim's funeral procession to Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

The Cincinnati sign on the west side of the Duke Energy Convention Center was turned blue with a black bar through it to symbolize the black bunting officers wear on their badges. It is a sign of mourning Kim.

The public was encouraged to line the 16-mile funeral procession route on Montgomery Road between the Cintas Center and the Japanese Karate-Do dojo and Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
