On Friday, during Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, Disney revealed the long-awaited first trailer for "Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker."
The trailer is heavy on action and gives a first glimpse at Carrie Fisher's posthumous role of Leia in the upcoming movie.
"We'll always be with you," Luke Skywalker's voice says in the trailer. "No one's ever really gone."
And immediately afterward we hear the sound of Palpatine laughing. Though he was slain by Luke Skywalker in "Return of the Jedi," this trailer appears to be teasing the villain's return. Actor Ian McDiarmid also made an appearance following the debut of the trailer at Star Wars Celebration, seemingly confirming the character's return.
Details about the long-awaited final entry in the Skywalker saga have been nearly nonexistent in the year and four months since "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" opened. Most notably, in 2017, Disney replaced its original "Star Wars IX" director, Colin Trevorrow, with J.J. Abrams, who directed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
Since then, the most information fans have gotten has been occasional updates from Abrams when filming wrapped and updates about the cast. Disney announced in late July that returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong바카라 게임 웹사이트o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo and Billie Lourd, who is Carrie Fisher's daughter.
Joining the cast of "Episode IX" are Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant and Keri Russell, who will be joined by veteran "Star Wars" actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. Disney has also announced that "Lost" and "Lord of the Rings" star Dominic Monaghan is also joining the cast. "Dr. Who" and "The Crown" star Matt Smith will also join "Star Wars IX" in a key role.
It remains to be seen how Abrams will incorporate the late Carrie Fisher into the film. The actress died in 2016. As , "With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie바카라 게임 웹사이트s legacy and role as Leia in 'Episode IX' by using unseen footage we shot together in 'Episode VII.'"
How exactly that will happen is unclear. But, for now, we're one step closer to the release of "Star Wars IX" on Dec. 20.
