Santa Ono offers Officer Kim's sons full ride to UC
More than $100,000 raised for Kim's family
The president of the University of Cincinnati has offered to cover full undergraduate tuition for Officer Sonny Kim's three sons.
"As a small token of gratitude to Officer Sonny Kim, UC will cover full undergraduate tuition for his three sons should they matriculate at UC," Santa Ono said on Twitter.
Kim, 48, was fatally shot during a shootout in Madisonville Friday.
Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell said officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man with a gun acting erratically. Blackwell later said the shooting suspect called 911 on himself.
"This is what Cincinnati does. Cincinnati is special in that we stand behind each other when times are tough. And we are going to stand behind Officer Sonny Kim," Ono said.
Kim was the first officer to arrive and make contact with the suspect, Blackwell said. Gunfire broke out and Kim and the suspect were hit.
Blackwell said Kim was a 27-year veteran. He died at UC Medical Center.
The suspect, identified as Trepierre Hummons, 21, also died at the hospital.
A page was established for Kim's three teenage sons. More than $110,000 has been raised.
