A pregnant woman nearly died after her unborn baby kicked a hole in her womb

Terrifying

It might sound like the plot of some kind of terrifying sci-fi film, but when a woman from China was admitted to hospital with her life on the line after her baby kicked a hole in her womb, it was frighteningly real. The New York Post reports the woman, who's only known as Zhang, almost died at 35 weeks pregnant when the scary (but pretty rare, don't worry) incident occurred. Earlier this month the woman began experiencing severe stomach pains along with cold sweats and a racing pulse, so she took herself to A&E at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital in China. In a post on the hospital's social media page, it described how, at first, doctors thought her womb may have ruptured. An ultrasound later revealed that actually, Zhang's unborn child had kicked its leg through the wall of the womb and into the abdominal cavity, where its thighs had become stuck. Does anyone else feel queasy all of a sudden? The specialists immediately feared the risk of internal bleeding, and the risk that posed to both Zhang and her baby's lives, so they chose to operate. Luckily, they managed to safely deliver the baby girl. While operating, the surgeons found blood in the mother's stomach, along with a 7cm hole in the wall of her uterus. Looking back over the patient's medical history, it was discovered she'd had an operation to removed fibroids from her uterus the year before, and doctors realised it had happened because of a weak spot where the scar was, which had broken through when the baby kicked hard. How common is it?Obviously, this is a pretty rare thing to have happened, but it makes sense that women with old scars - including those left by previous c-sections - could be slightly more at risk.In order to find out just how rare this kind of scary incident is, Cosmopolitan UK spoke to Dr Seth Rankin, founder of the London Doctor's Clinic, who reported never personally having heard of a medical issue like this occurring throughout his career."I have never heard of it ever happening until the recent case reported from China," the doctor said. "Having said that, the uterus can rupture for a number of reasons other than over-vigorous kicking and this is a very serious condition. If you ever have sudden severe pain while pregnant get yourself immediately to an Accident and Emergency department," Dr Rankin advised. And he urged women who feel their babies kicking not to worry that it might do them any damage. "Babies kicking during pregnancy is usually reassuring and the source of much comment, sometimes humour and occasional discomfort," said the doctor.Thankfully, both mother and baby in this case are now reported to be doing well despite the traumatic incident.
