Senator Chris Van Hollen spoke with reporters here at Dulles International Airport after meeting with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man mistakenly deported to El Salvador. Senator Van Hollen said this case is about more than just Abrego Garcia. This case is about upholding constitutional rights. For Abrego Garcia. And for every American. Now the senator said that Abrego Garcia told him he was traumatized inside that notorious megaprison where he was being held with 25 prisoners per cell. But the senator also said that Abrego Garcia told him he has since been moved to *** different facility with better conditions. Now Abrego Garcia was living in Maryland on *** legal work permit when he was deported in March despite. *** previous court order barring his removal. Now the Trump administration admits that this was *** mistake, but both the United States and El Salvador say they lack the authority to bring Abrego Garcia back to the United States despite *** ruling from the Supreme Court that orders the United States to facilitate his return. Senator Van Hollen said the Trump administration is defying the courts, and I asked him if that is the case, how do lawmakers hold the administration accountable. What does Congress do? So you know everybody asks those of us who are Democratic senators whether there's any. Bottom line where Republican senators will say enough's enough and won't simply won't simply continue to be rubber stamps for the Trump administration. So far we haven't hit bottom. Without Republicans, Democrats are powerless, not totally powerless. To that end, Senator Van Hollen said he plans on using the appropriations process in Congress as leverage to try and bring Abrego Garcia back to the United States and change immigration policies at Dulles International Airport, I'm Christopher Sala.
