Mindy Cohn, the actress best known for playing Natalie Green in The Facts of Life, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. She fought the illness for years—but never went public until now. , Cohn revealed her private battle with breast cancer and how she got through it all.
Cohn says she suddenly felt exhausted while going on a walk, and had to call Helen Hunt, her friend, to physically help her. Her doctor then diagnosed her with breast cancer, and she underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and a double mastectomy. She made a clean break from Hollywood and stayed at a farm in Sharon Springs, New York, the home of her friends Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, the stars of The Fabulous Beekman Boys.
The recovery process was grueling. "I've always been an optimist, but the cancer metastasized. It kept spreading and coming back," she told the magazine. "I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, and then it would. And then I'd wait for another shoe to drop, and it would. I was frustrated and enraged. I couldn't control any of this. I couldn't fix it."
Cohn is now cancer-free, and is getting back to the acting world. She's even planning a trip to Machu Picchu next year. Her Facts of Life costar, Kim Fields, told that the two of them were in touch during her treatment. "She's an amazing source of everything: of life, of strength, of peace, of beauty ...certainly laughter, still," Fields said. "It was a blessing and an honor at a minimum to be there in any way she allowed."
