The first trailer for "" is here to show fans Joaquin Phoenix's take on the classic "Batman" villain.
Backed to Nat King Cole's "Smile," the moody trailer sees failed comedian Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) slowly transform into Joker, revealing Phoenix's take on the Joker's signature eerie laugh.
"My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face," he says in a voice-over, before things get decidedly darker: "I used to think that my life was a tragedy, but now I realize, it's a comedy."
"Joker" is an original story that has not been seen on the screen before, as the movie follows Fleck, a man disregarded by society who eventually transforms into the iconic Batman villain.
Director Todd Phillips debuted the first poster for the standalone movie Tuesday.
The movie also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Bill Camp, Glenn Fleshler, Shea Whigham, Brett Cullen, Douglas Hodge and Josh Pais.
A at Phoenix in "Joker" was revealed by Phillips last month as the movie hit the editing suite.
While we haven't seen any images of Phoenix's Joker in the villain's iconic purple suit yet, set photos have shown his Joker in , as well as in with the police (unsurprisingly).
"Joker" is coming to theaters in October.
