Major League Soccer terminates contract of FC Cincinnati's Aaron Boupendza
Updated: 4:13 PM EDT Aug 8, 2024
All right, we got heads coach Pat noon and Pat. Do you wanna start us off? Yeah, sure. That was, uh, great in the record. Do you have ***, ***, an idea about Matt's availability after he got? That was kind of the big thing. I've been coming out of the game on Saturday. So ho how's Matt doing? And what do you think about his prospects for Wednesday? Yeah, he won't be available. Ok. Not great. Um, so *** lot of this information just came in now, so we, I haven't had *** chance to, to have the, the full report from medical. So, um, I can't, I can't give you anything other than he's not gonna be available. Ok. Uh, are we to the extent that you can talk about it? I mean, I mean, I just don't, I don't know enough to give you, he won't be playing on Wednesday. Ok. So you don't know if it's long term or it could be? Ok. Ok. Yeah. Um, I have, I wanted to ask you *** question about Aaron B Penza as well. Um, he was available for selection on Saturday. Uh, obviously didn't make the dress list um, where is he in proximity to real minutes for this team? And do you think? Well, actually, because, uh, there's been *** lot of conversation, I'm sure you've seen some of it about, you know, whether or not he would play for FC Cincinnati again. Just, do you think? Will he, I anticipate that he didn't, uh, he didn't go on the trip because he got cleared on Thursday and he hasn't had any contact for, you know, six plus weeks having not trained with the, with the full group outside of two days where, you know, it was more situational. I just don't think it made sense in that moment to, to bring him on this trip. So he was available, but we need to see him in, in training for, you know, um, more than that, you know, day or two days, um, with contact. So it was more just time. Can I ask, um, was there any, just because of the circumstances of it not happening, you know, in the facility or stadium? But was there any kind of disciplinary action for him that he had to? Um, and then just going back to the mat situation? Obviously, my all is also being gone. Um, you've, you've said you feel good about your center back groupings, um, I guess that's really being tested even more. So, now how do you feel? Now with the three, I guess you've got still feel good with them, um, with what we have. But of course, when you lose key pieces, you know, the, the experience, the, the leadership, the quality, especially in that position uh will take *** hit. So we'll uh we'll look at our options and see what uh what the best combination is. But yeah, we're talking about, you know, losing two key pieces, but our opponent for, for Wednesday is missing *** lot of pieces too. So that can't be an excuse, Pat. You've used deandre Edland *** little bit as *** center back, mostly as *** kind of late game option. Do you feel like he's *** guy who could step into that role as well with the kind of depth and leadership you're just talking about? And what does that kind of offer for guys like Brett or Luca if that's the adjustment we made? Yeah, there's *** lot of moving parts when, when deandre comes inside in the center back position, I feel comfortable, we feel comfortable with him there because of his um you know, on ball quality decision making under pressure um with his defensive instincts, you know, you saw it uh at the end of the, the San Jose game making some really good plays in *** cover position for Kip centrally. So, um you know, the intensity is one V one defending closer to, to goal, all those things we feel comfortable with. So he'll be an option uh in that position and then it y has always been *** guy who's been very versatile for you. He's been able to play, I mean, it's been joked about constantly that he can play every position on the field at some point with his performance. Now, at the straightforward position, does it kind of feel like that's where his optimal place is or do you still view him as *** guy who can kind of play everywhere for you when need be, do you still view him as *** guy who can play everywhere? But it's what's our strongest group? And, and where does you? Yeah, fit into that. And certainly over the last couple of months at the uh uh along our front line has been really um positive with you. Yeah, and helpful for our group and you can see with the goal contributions. Um He's somebody that we've been able to rely on to, to score goals for us. So, uh but we'll continue to look at them in other positions. Can I go ahead please? I know, uh you know, throughout your playing and early coaching career, you have connections to *** lot of different clubs that are meaningful to you on different levels. But you know, um I, I like to ask you about Philly *** lot because you came here. You also had *** lot of success here and that was kind of the place where everyone was like, yeah, Pat's the next guy that's gonna get his chance. So I just, you know, I watched, uh, because of the time difference in Kickoffs, I was able to watch their game on Saturday. I caught some of the fallout on local radio. Kai Wagner saying what he said afterward. Just, I, I know it's not your situation anymore. You're here now. But as someone that was *** part of the, the, *** part of the big success that the union have had or does it distress you to see kind of the, the state they're in now and they're not in *** terrible state. But yeah, I mean, the, the there's *** lot of um strong relationship still there from gym to other uh members of that staff and um and players. So I root for, for Jim, I root for *** lot of those guys to have success. And um our, my focus, our focus is here but of course, from afar, you know, I follow them in *** different way than, than other teams and it's ***, it's *** tough stretch. Um and it hasn't happened uh outside of maybe *** bunch of draws, I think maybe it was last year. So they've been stable for *** long time and when you're stable and, and at the top of the league for so long, anytime there, you know, uh there's *** stretch where you're not winning games, you're not getting results. There's gonna be criticism, that's *** part of what we're all dealing with. And so I think the, the compliment there is, it's, it's been so long since we've seen them have, uh, have struggled, especially at home that, uh, we just haven't talked about it, but I can tell you with gym, uh, and, and with some of those leaders, um, they're gonna be fine. That's my view of it. And it doesn't make me any, any more comfortable about Wednesday. Um, if there's anything that, um, you know, any time their backs against the wall, these guys step up, Jim knows how to lead that group. So, um, we have to be very cautious about, uh, an opponent that while they might be struggling with the results has been in these situations before and, and, and come out on top, you mentioned Philly having *** plan of absences though this week. What do you anticipate from them? What do you kind expecting, keeping an eye on? Yeah, it's tricky because we've seen different, you know, structures from their group in, in our particular matchups. Um, you know, Elliott comes back into play, maybe Bedoya looks like potentially out, you know, I can't say that with certainty. So, um, knowing, uh, you know, some of these players in *** strong group, it could, it could look like *** five, it could look like *** four, you know, and, um, it's just *** matter of, uh, uh, you know, what they see as their best 11, you know, to come playoffs, but we've seen, um, you know, two different real structures with uh 532, if you will, um you know, the, the, the diamond uh with the back four, I know these are all just numbers, but it's, it's typically been what we've seen from our matchups and we, we just, we have to look at both because, you know, it's, it's *** unique situation with player availability for them, of, you know, who they're gonna field. So, um like I said, we'll, we still have to be prepared for, uh, what will be *** very challenging game despite, you know, their key pieces that they're missing. Can I ask something *** little different? Um, this club has talked about maybe having *** women's team at some point. Let's do something come up with NWSL expansion. Do you have any thoughts on just what I mean, you have *** daughter, uh, what it would mean to maybe have ***, *** woman, you get another professional sports team. Um, I don't have any experience with, you know, having been in *** club with an NWSL side, so I can't speak to that on *** personal level, but it would be great for our city to have another team. Um, knowing the support that our, uh, our club gets and, and the other, you know, professional teams as well as the collegiate sides get. This is *** sports town that, that'll certainly support, uh, an NWSL side. And, um, I could imagine that, uh, in terms of attendance in terms of, um, you know, recognition and support. This is *** pretty good uh market for that. So, you know, again, that's pretty basic from me, but there's *** lot more that goes into that and, uh, you know, that remains to be seen, but I just like the ambition of uh our club, our city to, to continue to grow and evolve. And that would certainly be *** part of the evolution of, of Cincinnati and, and the sports culture.
