One of the newest members of the Cincinnati Reds is hoping his neighbors across Freedom Way brings a former Northern Kentucky standout home.Luke Maile, who signed a one-year deal with the Reds in November, says he'd like to see the Cincinnati Bengals draft tight end Michael Mayer.Both were standouts at Covington Catholic High School."Selfishly, I would love to have him playing right across the street there in September," Maile said. "He's got a really bright future, he's a great guy, he work's really, really hard. Wherever he ends up, he's going to be great. "But, I think most of the area would really like to see him, unfortunately for his sake, fall to that pick and go to Cincinnati," Maile continued.A four-star recruit out of CovCath, Mayer was the top-ranked player out of Kentucky by 247Sports prior to his enrollment at Notre Dame. Mayer led ND in receptions (67), receiving yards (809) and receiving touchdowns (nine) last season. In Pro Football Focus' post-combine Top 100 prospect big board, Mayer was the 28th-ranked player.The Bengals hold the 28th pick in this year's draft, and look like they may enter the draft with a major need at tight end. According to Spotrac, only three tight ends are under contract in 2023 for Cincinnati: Devin Asiasi, Tanner Hudson and Nick Bowers.Entering his eighth year in the majors, Maile is looking to help improve a Reds catching corps that was put together on the fly for most of 2022, after an injury-riddled season from Tyler Stephenson who suffered a concussion, broken thumb and broken clavicle.The Reds started six players at catcher last year not named Maile, with only one hitting above .200 (Aramis Garcia, .213 over 47 games).Maile slashed .221/.301/.326 with Cleveland last year, hitting three home runs and driving in 17 runs.
