A meal from probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of , but the fast casual restaurant is hoping to change that. Chipotle is currently testing quinoa at its New York City test kitchen, and if it's a big enough hit, it might become a permanent substitute for the brand's beloved .
Chipotle's test kitchen started serving the trendy alternative on . A spokesperson for the restaurant, Chris Arnold, told that the new menu addition is a mix of "red and gold quinoa tossed with a little citrus juice, cumin, and freshly chopped cilantro." It essentially has all the same flavors of cilantro lime rice, though it's made with a completely different grain.
Quinoa sits alongside a handful of items Chipotle has added to its menu in the last two years. The brand back in 2016, though the spicy pork and sausage mixture's , as it was removed from the lineup last summer. Then, after what seemed like ages of customer requests, the restaurant introduced chorizo this past fall — but it has received some .
Of course, there's no word yet whether quinoa will get a nationwide rollout, but if it does, hopefully it'll be able to make a better first impression than the brand's queso.
