Northern Kentucky mayor accused of mishandling finances, removed from office
The mayor of Williamstown, Kentucky, has been removed from office and an acting interim mayor has been appointed to take his place.
Mark Christopher was removed from office after a lengthy hearing that lasted most of the day Monday.
Williamsburg City Council called for the hearing, listing two counts of accusations.
Christopher was accused of one count of misconduct and willful neglect of office for not informing the council about financial obligations and the problems that ensued.
Specifically, the city was bouncing checks, and council members said they were not aware of the issue until long after it happened.
The second count was that he oversaw paying overtime to employees who were not eligible for overtime.
The fire chief, a salaried position, was getting overtime while not being eligible for it.
The mayor blamed a city clerk who he put in office last summer for all of the problems.
After the hearing, City Council members served as the jury and went into executive session to discuss the matter.
They came out and voted 6-0 that the mayor had violated his duty on both counts.
The council also appointed Councilman David Henson as the acting interim mayor.
There will be another vote to appoint the person who will be the interim mayor to fill out the entire remaining term of the mayor on May 5.
The council could keep Henson or vote in someone else.
