Thousands come to celebrate life, honor sacrifice of Gordon
Cincinnati's mayor described the community as heartbroken today as firefighter Daryl Gordon was buried nearly a week after falling down an elevator shaft while trying to rescue others in a Madisonville fire.
Chief Richard Braun told mourners who gathered at St. Peter-In-Chains Cathedral they should consider Gordon as hero, not only in death but also in the way he conducted his life.
The 54-year-old Fire Apparatus Operator was also a bomb technician and part of the University of Cincinnati's Air Care operation.
The walking procession to the cathedral began at 8:55 a.m. with Engine 14 at Cincinnati Fire Department Station 14, on Central Avenue.

"Twelve people are alive today because of the actions of brother Daryl Gordon and his fellow firefighters,바카라 게임 웹사이트 Local 48 President Matt Alter said.
The tribute to his life was freighted with rich symbolism outside St. Peter-In-Chains.
Lori Griffith, of Amberley Village, absorbed it. She is the wife of a firefighter and the mother of two others. Griffith said she was honored to stand witness to their part in the procession.
"I'm very proud of all of them,바카라 게임 웹사이트 she said. "I'm always very nervous and scared every time I hear that sound, that alarm sound. Sometimes I'm talking to them on the phone바카라 게임 웹사이트"
It further solidifies in her mind the inherent dangers of the job. Braun related how "Gordo" touched lives with his teaching, teasing and the twinkle in his eyes.
To laughter, District Fire Chief Raffel Prophett related the story of when the no-smoking policy was instituted in the firehouses decades ago.
"For Daryl to strip the cigarette out of the Fire Chief's mouth and say, 'No smoking in the firehouse, Chief,'" Prophett remembered.
The packed pews ate it up. The assembled also heard how the firehouse was in his blood since he was a 9-year-old kid on a bike, pedaling in the direction of public service. The firefighters there today share that drive, just as they do the risks that come with it.
"So, this is an honor to be up here representing this man,바카라 게임 웹사이트 Gordon's nephew, John Gordon, said, who choked up as he spoke about how the family will miss his uncle's guidance and easy manner.
John Gordon had the Engine 14 Heavy Apparatus Team stand as people applauded.
"Those three gentlemen and the guys in the back, they brought Daryl home. That day they went into that fire and they saved those 12 people; those people you see standing brought this great man home."
The procession included about 250 fire trucks from departments across the Greater Cincinnati area. It traveled through Cincinnati, Springfield Township, Wyoming, Woodlawn, Glendale and Springdale.
Between 40 and 50 buses carried about 3,500 firefighters and Gordon's extended family from the cathedral to the cemetery. A celebration of life service was held at Duke Energy Convention Center immediately following Gordon's burial.
