The three Ku Klux Klan members who set the bomb were convicted and sentenced 14 years later.At the Ballard House, Dr. Herschell Hamilton, Sr. treated injured civil rights demonstrators - including Martin Luther King, Jr. - during the 1960s. Since then, the site has been home to civic clubs, an active kitchen and more.The Brown Chapel served as the starting point for three Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965.This includes the Bloody Sunday March, when about 550 protesters took to U.S. Highway 80. Some were brutally beaten by state troopers and retreated to the chapel. Seventeen people were hospitalized.
