Police: Man arrested after SWAT standoff near Miami University campus
A man has been taken into custody after police and SWAT units responded to an apartment near Miami University in Oxford.
It began Tuesday afternoon around 5:30 p.m. and ended with an arrest around 9:30 p.m. on South Locust Street and W. High Street.
Oxford police say they received a report from a woman that her ex-boyfriend was trespassing in her apartment and had entered without her knowledge.
Officers say they attempted to make contact with the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Harrison Hooks Jr., and attempted to enter the apartment with a key, but were unsuccessful.
Police say Hooks refused to negotiate with officers at the door, and assistance with Miami University and Oxford Township police were requested to secure the perimeter and the Butler County Regional SWAT Team responded.
Authorities say crisis negotiators attempted to establish contact with Hooks, but received no answer. Commands were issued throughout for Hooks to surrender, but he refused.
Police say gas was eventually used, but Hooks continued to not comply. A K9 was deployed from the Butler County Sheriff's Office, leading to Hooks being taken into custody.
Hooks was taken to McCullough Hyde Hospital after being bit by the K9.
Hooks was recently released from prison and on parole. Charges remain pending against him.
