'Super rewarding': Lifelong friends help others find vaccine appointments in their spare time
EMILY: KATIE THOMPSON SHOWS US HOW THEY ARE TAKING MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS. >> LIFELONG FRIENDS FIGURED OUT EARLY ON THAT THE VACCINATION ROLLOUT WAS ANYTHING BUT SIMPLE FOR THE AT RISK POPULATIONS FIRST IN LINE. >> WE KNEW IN OUR PARENTS WERE SEARCHING IN THAT THEY COULD JUST NOT NAVIGATE THE SITES. >> THEY DID THEIR OWN RESEARCH FINDING LOCAL CLINICS IN THE AREA WITH APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE. FROM THEIR OWN SUCCESS, WORD QUICKLY SPREAD. >> IT STARTED WITH US HELPING OUR PARENTS, AND THEN THEIR FRIENDS AND THEIR FRIENDS. >> I STARTED SCROLLING THROUGH MY PHONE AND THINKING OF EVERYONE IN THAT AGE GROUP. >> IN 10 DAYS THEY HAVE HELPED A 125 ELIGIBLE PEOPLE GET THE VACCINE, WITH MANY MORE ON A LIST. WHEN THEY ARE NOT WORKING THERE FULL-TIME JOBS, THEY ARE BOOKING APPOINTMENTS. >> WE FIND THE TIME. >> BOTH WOMEN HAVE LEARNED TIPS AND TRICKS TO MAKE THE PROCESS LESS DAUNTING. >> THOSE APPOINTMENTS ARE THERE. YOU HAVE TO REFRESH, KEEP GOING IN AND OUT OF THAT DAY AND THAT CLINIC AND THEY POP UP. >> FOR US, CVS HAS DONE AN AMAZING JOB. THEIR SITE IS CLEAR, IT IS FAST, IT DOES NOT ASK YOU SEVEN PAGES OF INFORMATION. >> THEIR COMPASSION FOR OTHERS IS A SHINING EXAMPLE FOR THEIR YOUNG DAUGHTERS. >> THEY ARE KEEPING US TO KEEP GOING AND HELP OTHERS TO DO WHAT YOU CAN, SMALL ACTS OF KINDNESS. >> THE WOMEN KNOW THAT AVAILABILITY SEEMS TO BE GROWING, BUT SAY THEY WILL KEEP HELPING AS LONG AS THERE IS A NEED. WE ARE SO HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY. 'Super rewarding': Lifelong friends help others find vaccine appointments in their spare time
Lifelong friends Megan Marshall and Kristen Nelson realized early on that the vaccination rollout could be difficult to navigate. "We knew when our parents were searching that they just could not navigate the site," said Nelson.The tech-savy duo did their own research and found local clinics in the Sterling, Massachusetts, area with appointments available. Word about their helpful skill quickly spread. "It started with us helping our parents and then their friends and then their friend's friends," Nelson explained."I started scrolling through my phone and thinking of everyone in that (eligible) age group, parents of my friends from childhood," said Marshall. In 10 days, they've helped 125 people get the vaccine and many more are on their list. When they're not working, the women are helping to book appointments. "We find the time early morning, late at night and all weekend," said Marshall. "Those appointments are there so you have to just refresh - keep going in and out and in and out of that day and that clinic and they pop up." The women say they'll keep helping as long as there's a need. "It's been super rewarding. We're so happy to finally have a role to play," said Marshall.
