GATHERINGS, AND OTHER PLACES... AND THE INCREASES CONTINUES TO BE SEEN AMOUNG YOUNGER PEOPLE. THOUGH 22 PERCENT O GRANITE STATERS ARE NOW FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19... DAILY CASES AND HOSPITALIZATIONS CONTINUE TO TICK UPWARDS. <DALY ZOOM, 6:10-6:24 REALLY IT'S NOT ANY ONE THING THAT'S CONTRIBUTING TO THE RISE IN CASES OR AT LEAST THE CONTINUED SPREAD OF COVID-19 IN OUR COMMUNITIES. IT'S REALLY JUST A COMBINATION OF PEOPLE STILL BEING IN THAT CLOSE CONTACT WITH ONE ANOTHER AND NOT BEING VACCINATED YET.> DR. BETH DALY SAYS WHILE CONCERNED ABOUT THE TREND... THERE ARE FEWER CASES AMONG OLDER GROUPS THAT HAVE RECEIVED THEIR SHOTS. <DALY ZOOM, 5:38-5:45 AND SO WE REALLY NEED THIS VACCINE AND THE IMMUNITY TO INFILTRATE ACROSS ALL OF OUR AGE GROUPS TO KEEP THE CASE COUNTS LOW.> TONIGHT, HEALTH OFFICIALS ARE CONFIRMING THREE CASES OF THE VIRUS AMONG PEOPLE FULLY VACCINATED... MEANING AT LEAST TWO WEEKS AFTER THEIR SECOND SHOT. DR. DALY EXPECTS THERE WILL BE MORE OF WHAT ARE BEING CALLED "BREAKTHROUGH" INFECTIONS. <DALY ZOOM, 8:14-8:23 WE DO COLLECT INFORMATION ON THE VACCINE THEY GOT. IT'S NOT NECESSARILY A MATTER OF FAILURE OF THE VACCINE PER SAY THOUGH. AGAIN, THESE VACCINES AREN'T 100% EFFECTIVE. THE CDC SAYS THE RISK CAN'T BE COMPLETELY ELIMINATED WHILE THERE'S STILL COMMUNITY TRANSMISSION... EVEN AS VACCINES ARE CURBING THE RATE OF SPREAD. <DALY ZOOM, 7:46-8:01 THEY'RE VERY EFFECTIVE AT PREVENTING COVID-19 AND SO WE HAVE SEEN REDUCTIONS IN TRANSMISSION AMONG THOSE WHO ARE HIGHLY VACCINATED. WE'RE GONNA CONTINUE TO SEE COVID-19 UNFORTUNATELY EVEN WHEN WE GET REALLY GOOD VACCINATION COVERAGE ACROSS THE STATE.> THE STATE WAS DOING CONTACT TRACING FOR EVERY INFECTION WHEN NUMBERS DROPPED LAST MONTH... BUT OFFICIALS HAVE HAD TO PRIORITIZE AGAIN DUE TO DAILY NUMBE

Health officials say some cases will break through as long as virus still spreading

Three people in New Hampshire have come down with COVID-19 after they were fully vaccinated, but health officials say that's to be expected while the virus is still spreading widely in the community.Dr. Beth Daly, chief of the New Hampshire's Bureau of Infectious Disease Control, said the three Granite Staters who contracted the virus were at least two weeks past their second shots. New Hampshire has averaged about 450 cases per day across all age groups, but Daly said the increase is more pronounced in younger people.Just over 22.4% of the state is now fully vaccinated, but officials said that's not enough to keep case counts low, as transmission is still happening in households, as well as in clusters from social events and other settings.Daly said there will still be new cases even after most people get the shot."We know that these vaccines aren't 100% effective," she said. "We are going to have what we call breakthrough disease, which is when someone acquires COVID-19 even though they're fully vaccinated. For the most part, though, especially the vaccines that are currently in use right now, they're very effective at preventing COVID-19, and so we have seen reductions in transmission among those who are highly vaccinated."Related video: College student contracts COVID-19 after being fully vaccinatedDaly said she expects to see other cases among fully vaccinated people."We do collect information on the vaccine they got," she said.
