Mickey, a 6-year-old Bull Terrier mix, met his new partner Wednesday morning for his first day on duty with the La Vista Police Department in Nebraska."One of the shelter dogs is going to be a K-9 cop for the day and is going to go out with one of the La Vista police officers," Pam Wiese, with the Nebraska Humane Society, said.The new "K-9 for a Day" program was adopted by the LVPD and is a partnership with the Nebraska Humane Society, bringing awareness to dog adoptions. "It seemed like a win-win for both of us, where we could definitely continue our programs with involving our community, but also help the Humane Society find a great home for a great dog," Captain Bryan Waugh, with the LVPD, said."Oftentimes animals that are out of this environment have a better chance of getting adopted-- if people see them in a normal environment rather than here," Wiese said.Mickey rode up front in the cruiser as his patrol began later in the day. He received his own badge at the La Vista Police headquarters. "We'll get out in the community and do community policing that we definitely embrace and hopefully help the Humane Society find a great home for Mickey and other dogs in the future," Waugh said.Mickey's energetic personality was a plus, as he made new friends outside the Costco in La Vista."We want to get a dog that's really friendly, that's very comfortable and social with people," Wiese said.She's hoping one of those people will bring Mickey home soon.Mickey was the first dog to participate in the program. The La Vista Police Department hopes to do this at least once a month from now on.
