Conversation with the Candidate

2024 SPECIAL IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW HAMPSHIRE INSTITUTE OF POLITICS CONVERSATION WITH THE CANDIDATE. AND NOW FLORIDA GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS. HELLO, AND WELCOME TO OUR CONVERSATION WITH THE CANDIDATE SERIES. I'M ADAM SEXTON AND OUR GUEST IS THE GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA, RON DESANTIS, A REPUBLICAN. WE'LL BE GETTING TO KNOW THE GOVERNOR AND WHERE HE STANDS ON KEY ISSUES. AT THE START OF OUR SHOW, I'LL BE ASKING THE CANDIDATES SOME QUESTIONS. AND THEN AFTER A BREAK, WE'LL HAVE OUR STUDIO AUDIENCE ASK THEIR QUESTIONS IN A TOWN HALL FORMAT. BUT BEFORE WE BEGIN WITH THAT, LET'S TAKE A QUICK LOOK AT THE CANDIDATES BIOGRAPHY AND RON DESANTIS IS THE 46TH GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA. HE WAS FIRST ELECTED TO THE POSITION IN 2018, BECOMING FLORIDA'S YOUNGEST GOVERNOR IN A CENTURY. DESANTIS WAS REELECTED IN 2022. PRIOR TO HIS TIME IN TALLAHASSEE, HE WAS ELECTED TO CONGRESS IN 2012, SERVING THREE TERMS, REPRESENTING FLORIDA'S SIXTH DISTRICT, COVERING DAYTONA BEACH AND THE PALM COAST. DESANTIS GRADUATED WITH HONORS FROM YALE UNIVERSITY, WHERE HE WAS CAPTAIN OF THE BASEBALL TEAM. HE WENT ON TO HARVARD LAW SCHOOL AND EARNED A COMMISSION IN THE US NAVY AS A JAG OFFICER, EVENTUALLY VOLUNTEERING FOR DEPLOYMENT IN IRAQ, WHERE HE WOULD SERVE AS AN ADVISOR TO A U.S NAVY SEAL COMMANDER. AFTER ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE, HE SERVED AS A FEDERAL PROSECUTOR. HE'S THE AUTHOR OF TWO BOOKS, DREAMS FROM OUR FOUNDING FATHERS FIRST PRINCIPLES IN THE AGE OF OBAMA AND THE COURAGE TO BE FREE. FLORIDA'S BLUEPRINT FOR AMERICA'S REVIVAL. DESANTIS, IN ANNOUNCING HIS PRESIDENTIAL BID, SAID HE'S RUNNING BECAUSE HE BELIEVES THAT THE COUNTRY IS GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION, BUT, QUOTE, AMERICA IN DECLINE IS NOT INEVITABLE. IT IS A CHOICE. HE IS MARRIED TO CASEY, AN EMMY AWARD WINNING TELEVISION HOST. THE COUPLE HAVE THREE CHILDREN, TWO DAUGHTERS, MADISON AND MAMIE AND A SON, MASON. ALL RIGHT, GOVERNOR DESANTIS, THANKS FOR JOINING US ON CONVERSATION WITH THE CANDIDATE. IT'S GREAT TO BE HERE. OKAY. A FEW QUESTIONS FROM ME. FIRST ON A COUPLE OF TOPICS. LET'S START WITH THIS. IN 2020, TWO, DEMOCRATS EXTRAORDINARILY OUTPERFORMED EXPECTATIONS POLITICALLY IN THE MIDTERMS, HAMMERING ON THE ISSUE OF ABORTION ACCESS. IT'S VERY LIKELY THEY'RE GOING TO USE THIS SAME PLAYBOOK IN 2024 AS WELL. IF YOU'RE THE NOMINEE AND YOU'RE ATTACKED IN PLACES LIKE NEW HAMPSHIRE AND PENNSYLVANIA, IN WISCONSIN, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO RESPOND WHEN THEY SAY RON DESANTIS AS PRESIDENT WOULD TAKE AWAY RIGHTS THAT WE ALREADY HAVE IN THESE STATES? WELL, LOOK, AT THE END OF THE DAY, I MEAN, YOU KNOW, WE PROTECTED IN FLORIDA THE RIGHTS FOR FOR UNBORN BABIES THAT HAVE A DETECTABLE HEARTBEAT TO BE ABLE TO HAVE A SHOT IN LIFE. AND THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS RIGHT FOR OUR STATE AND NO OTHER STATES HAVE HAVE DONE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY. I'M CONSCIOUS OF THE DIVERSITY OF OPINION IN THE UNITED STATES. NEW ENGLAND IS DIFFERENT THAN TEXAS. WISCONSIN IS DIFFERENT THAN GEORGIA, YOU KNOW, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU KNOW, WE DO WANT TO PROMOTE A CULTURE OF LIFE. THERE'S A VARIETY OF WAYS YOU CAN DO THAT AS PRESIDENT. WE'RE NOT GOING TO ALLOW TAXPAYER FUNDING FOR ABORTION, AND WE'RE GOING TO ENSURE THAT WE HAVE JUSTICES ON THE SUPREME COURT THAT ARE GOING TO ALLOW THE POLITICAL BRANCHES TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE. AND WE WILL NOT ALLOW WHAT THE DEMOCRATS WANT TO DO, WHICH IS FORCE IT FEDERALLY TO WHERE THERE'S ABORTION. EVEN UP UNTIL THE MOMENT OF BIRTH. I THINK THAT THAT'S WRONG. DO YOU KNOW WHERE THAT'S BEEN GOING ON, THOUGH? HAS THERE BEEN POST-BIRTH ABORTIONS? CALIFORNIA? YEAH, THEY HAVE IT. AND, YOU KNOW, THERE HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTS TO DO INFANT BORN ALIVE PROTECTIONS IN DIFFERENT PLACES. AND SOME OF THE PEOPLE ON THE FAR LEFT WILL VOTE THAT DOWN. SO IT'S LIKE IF SOMEONE SURVIVES AN ABORTION, LIKE YOU WANT TO GIVE THEM MEDICAL CARE, I MEAN, COME ON. AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE GOT TO BE HUMANE ABOUT IT. AND AS PRESIDENT, WHAT SORT OF RESTRICTIONS WOULD YOU ACCEPT IN TERMS OF WEEKS GESTATION? WHERE WOULD YOU DRAW THE LINE IF THAT BILL LANDS ON YOUR DESK AT THE END OF THE DAY AS PRESIDENT? YOU KNOW, MY MY JOB IS TO TO STAND AND PROMOTE A CULTURE OF LIFE. THE CONGRESS IS THE ONE THAT ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, DOES THE LEGISLATION. I THINK IF YOU'VE LOOKED AT WHAT'S HAPPENED THERE, THERE'S NOT BEEN A LOT OF PRODUCTIVE THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN DONE ACROSS A WIDE VARIETY OF ISSUES. SO TO ME, YOU KNOW, THE PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT'S REALLY BOTTOM UP IN DIFFERENT AREAS. YOU KNOW, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE MORE PROGRESS. SOME AREAS IT'S NOT AS NOT AS BIG, BUT THAT I THINK RECOGNIZES THE DIVERSITY OF THIS COUNTRY. WE HAD A LOT OF VIEWERS SENDING IN QUESTIONS TO US ABOUT THIS, YOU KNOW, FIRESTORM OVER THE CURRICULUM IN FLORIDA ABOUT AMERICAN SLAVERY. ODDLY ENOUGH, MANY OF THOSE QUESTIONS MISREPRESENTED WHAT YOU HAD SAID ORIGINALLY ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON HERE. SO JUST TO CLARIFY, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR SCHOOL KIDS TO LEARN ABOUT AMERICAN SLAVERY? WE WANT THEM TO LEARN ALL THE FACTS ABOUT ALL OF AMERICAN HISTORY, ALL OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY, INCLUDING SLAVERY. BUT OF COURSE, NOT LIMITED TO THAT. THIS WAS PUT IN THERE WAS A WORKING GROUP WITH AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOLARS. MOST OF THEM WERE BLACK THEMSELVES. ONE OF THEM WAS THE HEAD OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION. IN THE PAST, THEY DEVISED THIS CURRICULUM, NO POLITICAL AGENDA, TO JUST DO WHAT WAS TRUE. KAMALA HARRIS THEN COMES DOWN AND EVERYONE WAS SAYING HOW GREAT THIS WAS. JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO, KAMALA HARRIS CAME DOWN TO FLORIDA, WAS TRYING TO DEMAGOGUE IT, TRYING TO SAY THAT THESE BLACK HISTORY SCHOLARS WERE DESIGNING A CURRICULUM, SAYING THAT SLAVERY WAS SOMEHOW GOOD. NO WAY. IF YOU READ THE STANDARDS THAT THEY CREATED, THEY SHOWED EVERY DETAIL ABOUT THE INJUSTICE OF SLAVERY. THAT IS JUST THE FACTS. AND SO SO THIS IS ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE PHONY NARRATIVES. AND IT'S INTERESTING, THE REASON WHY WE HAVE BLACK HISTORY STANDARDS. MOST STATES DON'T HAVE IT AT ALL. WE ELIMINATED CRITICAL RACE THEORY THROUGH OUR K, THROUGH 12 SCHOOLS. WE WERE THEN ACCUSED OF NOT WANTING TO TEACH ABOUT BLACK HISTORY. BUT THOSE ARE DIFFERENT THINGS. IDEOLOGY IS DIFFERENT THAN HISTORY. SO THAT'S WHERE THE STANDARDS WERE BORN OUT OF BECAUSE IT IS OUR COMMITMENT TO TELL THE TRUTH. BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR KIDS TO LEARN ABOUT SLAVERY? WELL, I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS IT WAS A VIOLATION OF AMERICA'S FOUNDING PRINCIPLES. THE FOUNDING FATHERS, BY AND LARGE, ACKNOWLEDGE THAT SOME OF THEM WERE VERY VOCAL ABOUT IT. SOME OF THEM WERE A LITTLE QUIETER, BUT NO ONE OFFERED CREDIBLE ARGUMENTS THAT THE INSTITUTION OF SLAVERY WAS CONSISTENT WITH THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE OR WITH THE THE IDEALS OF OUR CONSTITUTION. THEY BELIEVE THAT IT WOULD DIE OUT AND ENDED UP OBVIOUSLY, YOU KNOW, HELPED PRECIPITATE A CIVIL WAR. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU KNOW, IT WAS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY THAT WAS BORN TO FIGHT THE INSTITUTION OF SLAVERY EXPANSION AND ULTIMATELY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY UNDER ABRAHAM LINCOLN WAS THE VEHICLE TO EXTINGUISH SLAVERY IN THIS COUNTRY. ALL RIGHT. LET'S GET TO SOME OF THOSE TOWN HALL QUESTIONS OUT BACK. COMING UP AFTER THE BREAK, WE'LL BRING IN OUR STUDIO AUDIENCE TO THIS CONVERSATION. STAY WITH US
