Researchers used sleep for insights about toddlers and memory. Here's what they found
BACK TO YOU GUYS. DEIRE:DR TY -- THANK YOU. 8:14 NOW. NEW THIS MORNING, EXPERTS SAY VERY YOUNG CHILDREN LEARN WORDS AT A TREMENDOUS RATE. THE U C DAVIS MIND INSTITUTEAS H DONE A STUDY ON SLEEPING TODDLERS TO SEE HOW THE BRAIN REMEMBERS NEW WORDS AT SUCH AN EARLY AGE. TY: THIS IS FASCINATING. DOCTOR SIMONA GHETTI IS A PROFSOESR AT THE UC DAVIS PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND CENTER FOR MIND AND BRAIN. SHE IS HERE TO TELL US ABOUT THE FINDINGS. THANKS FOR JOINING US. THIS IS EXCITING. >> GOOD MORNING. TY: WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DO THE SLEEP STU?DY IS IT BECAUSE TODDLERS HAVE A HARD TIME SITTING STILL? >> THAT IS RIGHT. WHEN WE WANT TO TRY AND STUDY HOW THE BRAIN SUPPTSOR LEARNING, WHAT WE TYPICALLY DO IS TO TAKE PICTURES OF THE BRAIN WHILE PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO REMEMBER OR LEARN AND TO TAKE CLEARER PICTURES, PEOPLE NEED TO BE VERY STILL. TODDLERS ARE NOT TERRIBLY GOOD AT IT. TY:O. N >> WE ALL KNOW THAT, BUT ALSO, TODDLERS ARE OFTEN AFRAID OF DARK SPACES AND LOUD NOISES, WHICH IS WHAT IT IS LIKE IN AN MRI MACHINE, SO WE NEEDED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ABILITY FOR THEM TO BE SLLTI WHILE THEY ARE ASLEEP. DEIRDRE: WHAT DOES IT MEAN, YOUR RESEARCH, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH TH?AT WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW THIS? >> WE KNOW THAT YOUNG CHILDREN LEARN MANY WORDS AT A FAST RATE. CONSIDERY BTHE TIME THEY ARE THREE YEARS OF AGE, THEY MAY KNOW AS MANY AS 0010 WORDS, AND THEY WTAN TO KNOW THE DEVELOPING BRAIN바카라 게임 웹사이트S ABILITY, SO DURING A PERIODF O VAST DEVELOPMTEN OF LANGGEUA EXPANSION, WE REALLY WANT TO KNOW HOW THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PUZZLE FIT TOGETHER. :TY WHEN I READ THE RESEARCH, IT GIVES VALIDATION THAT NOTLL A BRAINS ARE LIKE -- THAT BRAINS ARE LIKE SPONGES. DOES THIS REINFORCE KIND OF AN OLD THEORY AND HELP US GET DOWN TO BUSINESS WHEN IT COMES TO TALKING, READING, AND ENGAGING WITH OUR KIDS? >> ABSOLUTELY. THAT IS EXACTLY RIGHT. WHAT WE ARE SEEING IS AT THE PERIOD WHERE THE BRAIN DEVELSOP VERY FAST,LS AO THE ABILITY TO LEARN IS INCREASING. WORDS ARE ONE MARRKE OF THE REMARKABLE LEARNING THAT CHILDREN ARE ABLE TO DO IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. YOU ARE RHTIG THAT WE CAN HELP THEM LRNEA BY TALKING TO THEM, READING TO THEM, AND ENGAGING, CONVERSATIONS. DEIRDRE: MY TAKE AWAY A LAYPERSON IS NOT TIME MATTERS. >> -- MAP TIME IT MATTERS -- MAP TIME MATTERS. >> IT DOES SHOW ATTH NAPTIME DOES IMPROVE MEMORY. TY: I HAVE A 1.5-YEAR-OLD AND THREE-YEAR-OLD AT HOME. IT IS AMAZING HOW MUCH THEY SLEEP IF YOU LET THEM. HAVE TO ADJUST YOUR LIFE TO MEET THOSE. DEIRE:DR THE GOOD NEWS IS I HEAV A 15-YEAR-OLD WHO HAS WE DISCOVERED NAPPING. TY: THEY CIRCLE BACK TO IT. DEIRE:DR WE HAVE HEARD A LOT ABOUT SLEEP ORVE THE YEARS. IT IS INTERESTING HOW MUCH RESPECT SLEEP IS GETTING THESE DAYS BY RESEARCHERINS SOCIETY, REGARDLESS OF OUR AGE. IT IS IMPORTANT. >> ABSOLUTELY IS. DEDRIR THANKS FOR JOINING US AND SHARING THE RESEARCH ON THE WHY BEHIND IT. TY: V

Experts say very young children learn words at a tremendous rate. The UC Davis MIND Institute has done a study on sleeping toddlers to see how the brain remembers new words at such an early age. The study found that children's hippocampus activated when the sleeping kids were played words they had previously learned. UC Davis psychology professor Dr. Simona Ghetti joined sister station KCRA to talk about the findings. Why did you have to do the sleep study? Is it because toddlers have a hard time sitting still? Ghetti: "That is right. When we want to try and study how the brain supports learning, what we typically do is to take pictures of the brain while people are trying to remember or learn and to take clearer pictures, people need to be very still 바카라 게임 웹사이트 which we know toddlers are not terribly good at it. We all know that, but also, toddlers are often afraid of dark spaces and loud noises, which is exactly what it is like in a MRI machine. So we needed to take advantage of the ability for them to be still while they are asleep."What does it mean, your research? What do you do with that? Why is it important to know this? Ghetti: "We know that young children learn many, many words at a fast rate. Consider that by the time they are 3 years of age, they may know as many as 1,000 words and we want to know how the developing brain supports this ability. So during a period of very vast developmental of brain, memory and language expansion, we really want to know how the different parts of the puzzle fit together."When I read the research, it gave validation to that old term, "kids' brains are like sponges."Ghetti: "Absolutely. What we are seeing is at the period where the brain develops very fast, also the ability to learn is increasing. Words are one marker of the remarkable learning that children are able to do in such a short period of time. You are right that we can their learning by talking to them, reading to them and engaging them in conversations."My takeaway as a layperson is that nap time mattersGhetti: "Naptime does matter. There's actually work that shows that napping improves memory."Watch the video above for the full story.

My takeaway as a layperson is that nap time matters

Ghetti: "Naptime does matter. There's actually work that shows that napping improves memory."
