Amid President Joe Biden's campaign for reelection, a growing number of Americans are expressing disappointment with his first term, according to the findings of a new national poll. Fifty-eight percent of the respondents to the UMass-Amherst/WCVB poll said Biden has fallen short of their expectations, the highest rate in the four times the poll has asked this question. The latest poll also found Biden's overall approval rating to be 39%, which is down from 44% in June's poll. When pollsters asked respondents to explain their disapproval of Biden, some of the most common words in their responses included "inflation," "economy," "border," "immigration," and "old.""In thinking about how people view President Biden, or at least the arguments for why they give him such low approval ratings, they really focus attention on the economy," said Professor Tatishe M. Nteta, who directs the poll. The national poll is based on responses from 1,064 individuals who answered the survey between Jan. 25 and Jan. 30. The margin of error is 3.7%. According to the poll, Americans are most concerned about the way Biden has handled immigration, with 67% of respondents indicating he has handled the issue "not too well" or "not well at all." At least half of those polled also had negative opinions of how the president has handled inflation, taxes, crime, jobs, climate change, the Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine war. There was no issue included in the poll where respondents gave Biden a majority positive review. The poll found that 36% would describe the nation's economy as "fair," and 35% would describe it as "poor." Some of the most common words used to explain those ratings were "inflation" and "high prices."More than half of those polled said that in the past year, they did not have enough money to save for a goal, such as a vacation, a new car or home improvements. More than one-third said they did not have enough money to save for big expenses like college or retirement. "If we just look at standard economic indicators of well-being, whether that's unemployment or how well the stock market is doing, we're finding that the American economy is running relatively smoothly," Nteta said. "So there's a lack of congruence between these economic indicators and how people are viewing how well the economy is doing, and then their assessment of President Biden."
