A picture of Pope Francis sits at the front of Bellarmine Chapel at Xavier University, marking a space where people can gather to pray and reflect on his legacy.
"It's going to be a moment of recollection and prayer for the church," said Xavier Vice President of Mission and Ministry, the Rev. Eric Sundrup.
Sundrup pointed out that Pope Francis has been a pontiff marked by numerous historic firsts, notably as the first Jesuit ever elected to the papacy.
"That was a really historic moment for the Society of Jesus, for the Jesuits. You know, for the people connected to our parishes and communities here in Cincinnati. St. Xavier High school, Xavier University, there's a lot of Jesuit works and connections there," Sundrup said.
The Jesuits are a Catholic religious order renowned for their commitment to education and charitable service, particularly in advocating for and uplifting society바카라 게임 웹사이트™s most marginalized populations.
Dr. Marcus Mescher is an associate professor of Christian ethics at Xavier and has studied Pope Francis' papacy extensively.
"For most of his papacy, he was consistently ranked one of the most respected people on the planet. I mean, he had a lot of status. He had a lot of power. But he always used that in service of people who questioned if they mattered or belonged," Mescher said.
Mescher also believes the pope will be remembered by the timing of his death, Easter Sunday.
"It's stunning timing. If he had died yesterday, I think all of the focus would have been on Pope Francis rather than the risen Christ. So, we got to celebrate Easter joy with him and now we get to give thanks to God for his life," Mescher said.
