Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman returned to work on Monday at the U.S. Senate.His vehicle pulled up to the Capitol at 2:30 p.m., and he got out wearing his familiar attire of a hoodie, gym shorts and sneakers.He didn't take any questions from reporters, only saying, "It's great to be back."Fetterman has been away from the Capitol for two months after he checked himself into Water Reed Medical Center in February to be treated for depression.Fetterman was discharged on March 31 and spent the Senate's Easter break in his hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania.The 53-year-old senator's doctors now say his depression is "in remission."His staff also confirmed Fetterman has been fitted for hearing aids to help with an auditory processing disorder he has had since suffering a stroke last year. He has also used closed captioning technology.Difficult time to be awayA political analyst at George Washington University described the impact of Fetterman's absence after only a short time on the job."It put a lot of burden on the learning curve, which is a very, very tough thing for a new senator. The procedure, the way of the hill, the norms, the traditions, there's no school for that, and it's usually learned on the job. So, when you're not there, you're not learning it. And it puts a huge burden on his staff to carry out the functions of his office, to carry out the constituent service demands, to carry out the messaging, to carry out the partisan interests of the state and those constituents," Casey Burgat said.AgendaOn Wednesday, Fetterman is expected to chair his first subcommittee hearing on nutrition assistance as well as the Senate farm bill. Previous hospital stayFetterman spent two nights in a hospital the week before he checked into Walter Reed. He had been feeling light-headed. The senator underwent tests, which ruled out another stroke, and there were no signs of a seizure.Senator suffered stroke last yearFetterman suffered a stroke in May 2022 while on the campaign trail. Statement from doctorA few weeks before the general election, Fetterman released a statement from his doctor about his health.Dr. Clifford Chen said Fetterman was "recovering well" and that in a recent office visit, the then-candidate "spoke intelligently without cognitive deficits." Chen also said Fetterman had no work restrictions and could work full duty in public office.
