FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OLYMPIC HISTORY ATHLETES FROM AROUND THE WORLD WILL COMPETE IN SPORT CLIMBING. NBC5'S MARSHALL KRAMSKY TOOK A TRIP TO PETRA CLIFFS IN BURLINGTON TO CHAT WITH LOCAL EXPERTS ABOUT HOW TO GET A GRIP ... ON THE NEWEST OLYMPIC COMPETITION. No athletes will be climbing with their life on the line, in Tokyo; although at times it may look like it. Andrea Charest: "There is three different disciplines that people will be combining so it's kind of like a tri- Athlon of climbing basically, and they are very different disciplines, they all demand very different skill and technique." Discipline 1, Speed climbing. Andrea Charest: "It's just as fast as someone can get up a 15 meter wall." Discipline 2, Lead or Sport Climbing - this is what you usually see at climbing centers like Petra Cliffs.. Andrea Charest "Longer climbing, basically for every hold that somebody climbs up is an additional point." Discipline 3, Bouldering. Andrea Charest "They style is sort of 3-Dimensional and gymnastics, and power." Petra Cliffs competition coach Cate Beebe's main discipline is bouldering. Cate Bebee Instead of rope climbing when you are attached to a rope, you are basically just climbing something with the pads down here as your protection, so when you fall, you are taking a ground fall every time." Cate Bebee "I think a lot of really good climbers tend to make things look easy, which is one of the coolest things about watching the world cup climbers and hopefully the Olympic Climbers." Andrea Charest "Imagine it's not going to look in a lot of ways like people are working that hard, because they are just making climbing look beautiful."
