Potential House vote to override governor's veto on the docket for first day of Ohio House session
Ohio House Republicans could override a veto by Gov. Mike DeWine on their first day back in session Wednesday.
It all centers around a bill banning gender-affirming treatment for minors and putting limits on trans athletes.
DeWine , a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for minors and ban male-born athletes from competing in girl's and women's sports.
The governor said he refused to sign the bill after speaking with doctors providing that care and the families it impacted.
"I've also listened to youth and parents. Parents who have told me if not for this treatment, their child would be dead," DeWine said. "The consequences of this bill could not be more profound.
"Ohio would be saying the state, the government, knows better than the two people who love that child the most, the parents," DeWine added.
Then, last week, he signed an executive order that would ban gender transition surgeries for minors. He also pushed for a set of rules centered around gender-affirming care and treatment for adults and children.
House Republicans appear to have enough votes to override that veto, but the governor hopes his executive order can help sway some Republican members.
House representatives are expected to meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
