EXPLAINER: What does 'yes' or 'no' vote mean for Ohio Issue 1 in November
Yard sign season is in full swing in Ohio, with just over a month left until the November election. Besides signs for the presidential election, you may have also noticed signs for or against Issue One popping up in yards across the state.
Issue One is Ohio바카라 게임 웹사이트s proposed redistricting amendment. Voters will have the option to either vote 바카라 게임 웹사이트Yes바카라 게임 웹사이트 or 바카라 게임 웹사이트No바카라 게임 웹사이트 on it.
As with almost any political issue, each side of the aisle is making its case for voters to vote one way or another.
Below is a deep dive into Issue One and into the heart of a heart of a neighborhood where districts are drawn to favor one side cut right through.
"You very precisely carve out literally block to block and even sometimes house to house which residents are in which district," said Michael Niven, a professor of political science at the University of Cincinnati.
Gerrymandering is the drawing of political maps to favor a certain party for a certain outcome. Right now, the Republican majority in Columbus controls how the maps turn out.
Niven said it makes a party more powerful than it is popular.
Homeowners in the area were surprised to learn of the line between the two dots on the map of their homes.
A group called 바카라 게임 웹사이트Citizens Not Politicians바카라 게임 웹사이트 led the charge to get Issue One on the November ballot. If the ballot measure passes, it would establish a redistricting commission made up of regular citizens and not politicians.
Right now, districts for Ohio바카라 게임 웹사이트s House, Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives are drawn by the Ohio Redistricting Commission. The commission was approved by Ohio voters in 2015. It was created to end gerrymandering. Previously, lines were drawn by members of the Ohio General Assembly.
In 2020, the commission was tasked for the first time with redrawing three different maps during the redistricting process, which happens every 10 years after the U.S. census. However, those maps led to a lengthy court battle in 2021 and 2022, where the Ohio Supreme Court ruled seven different times that the maps drawn by the Republican-dominated commission were 바카라 게임 웹사이트unconstitutional gerrymanders.바카라 게임 웹사이트
Voting 바카라 게임 웹사이트No바카라 게임 웹사이트 would mean the redistricting process remains unchanged in Ohio.
Voting 바카라 게임 웹사이트Yes바카라 게임 웹사이트 would remove politicians from the map-making process.
If the amendment is passed, a 15-member citizen panel of five Republicans, five Democrats and five independents will need a majority agreement to change the maps.
Anyone who is not a politician will be able to apply to be on the board.
