More than 100 military families were reunited Wednesday in a long-awaited homecoming after their loved ones spent months overseas.
After nine months away, soldiers from the New Hampshire Army National Guard reunited with their families at the Manchester Armory.
Throughout the room, many were overwhelmed simply by being able to see their loved one face-to-face.
"This is my fifth deployment," said Cmdr. Davis Ulricson. "My fourth since I've had a family and none of them are easy. You know, they're very difficult to be away for that long."
The soldiers deployed last spring to countries across the Middle East working in field artillery. There are about 180 Granite State National Guard troops deployed in support of missions overseas and throughout North America.
Many military families said deployments can be tough on their entire families, but National Guard leaders said the work the men and women have done has been critical to keeping the country safe.
"It's vital to the success of what we're doing here at home and abroad," Ulricson said. "Building partner relationships with our partner countries in the Middle East is very important if we want to keep a stable Middle East, and a stable Middle East means a stable home front."
A formal welcome ceremony will be held in the spring.
