will soon be trading in the small screen for the movie theater.
The documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor? chronicles the life and work of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood's Fred Rogers, who died in 2003 at age 74, and will be released theatrically on June 8, 2018. acquired the worldwide rights for the film directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom) and from Tremolo Productions, Impact Partners, and Independent Lens/PBS.
Named after Mister Rogers's signature phrase, Won't You Be My Neighbor? will go the beyond zip-up cardigans and land of make-believe we remember from the hit series to showcase the creative genius that inspired generations of children. "The Fred Rogers I discovered making this film is at once comfortably familiar and completely surprising," Morgan said in a statement. "I believe Mister Rogers is the kind of voice we need to hear right now."
Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was iconic children's show and one of the longest-running series on PBS, according to . It ended in 2001 after 31 seasons, but reruns of the series ran until August 2008. We can only hope that the documentary captures Rogers' whimsical charm and instills his hope and compassion in viewers once again.
"Morgan once again avoids making a traditional biodoc and instead takes us behind the curtain to see how Fred Rogers navigated the cultural and social issues of the second half of the twentieth century with his own brand of forward-thinking, compassionate wisdom far beyond his time," Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said in a statement. "Mister Rogers makes us all want to be better people, and we couldn't be more proud to be a part of telling his story today."
Until its premiere, we'll be streaming episodes Mister Rogers' Neighborhood on , or just listening to "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" over and over again in our heads.
