Miami University suspends fraternity until 2040 over alleged hazing, physical beatings
A fraternity at Miami University has been suspended for 15 years over allegations of hazing.
Kappa Alpha Psi initially received a permanent revocation of recognition, but the appeal resulted in a modification to a 15-year suspension.
This appeal decision came down on April 11.
The letter sent to Kappa Alpha Psi stated that the university found physical abuse of pledges or potential pledges. Miami University said the fraternity used paddling and other forms of hazing repeatedly over time.
"Wow, it바카라 게임 웹사이트s ridiculous. Ridiculous," sophomores Keir Armstrong and John Brookover said.
The same fraternity had hazing cases in 2019 and 2022.
Kappa Alpha Psi members and alumni are accused of using paddles and canes to beat students joining the fraternity.
"That's crazy, I had no idea that was happening here. That's insane to think about, that that was going on," Nick Rockich and Logan Deisher, sophomores at Miami said.
The accusations surfaced when a junior who was pledging went to the university. His attorney Tom Merriman is accusing fraternity members of beating pledges and keeping them awake until three, four, and five o'clock in the morning for weeks.
"The psychological manipulation, the beatings, the sleep deprivation, this kid was a shell of himself. He was practically catatonic. And his girlfriend had the sense to call his mother back in Cleveland and say, you know, what do I do? And they took him to a hospital and then they got him home," Merriman said.
During a disciplinary hearing, the student said, pledges were also brought to a house in the Dayton suburbs and beaten by Kappa Alpha Psi alumni as well.
"And my client testified those were the most brutal beatings he underwent during the entire process," Merriman said.
"You're an adult. Why are you coming back and doing that, that's crazy," Deisher said.
The university was initially considering a lifetime ban for Kappa Alpha Psi, a historically black fraternity, but after an appeal, decided on 15 years. That punishment, matching Miami's most severe fraternity sanction ever.
Merriman says they're pursuing civil action, but he wants the Butler County prosecutor to bring criminal charges.
"Committing what바카라 게임 웹사이트s been alleged in this case is a crime. The prosecutor ought to be investigating this case, ought to be presenting it to a grand jury and bringing charges," he said.
Merriman says the president and vice president of that fraternity are still students at Miami University.
