Impacts felt from federal workforce, budget cuts to AmeriCorps, food pantries
This week, volunteers who help in a wide range of emergency situations were let go from a federal agency called AmeriCorps.
It's the latest in the White House effort to trim the government workforce and the impacts from that decision and others are being seen here in Cincinnati.
"When organizations like AmeriCorps get hit, it affects all of us. Because we can't exist in a vacuum. We need all of these other partners," VP & COO of Lighthouse Youth and Family Services Bonita Campbell said.
Campbell says federal worker cuts will impact vulnerable young people in Cincinnati. AmeriCorps volunteers are ages 18-29. For 30 years, they responded to natural disasters and worked with local non-profits.
Its budget showed nearly $38 million in federal funding.
"Just is, it's unfortunate that we're losing this incredible organization that was bringing us people that were trying to help and understand underserved populations," Campbell said.
This month, the United Way of Cincinnati also uses those volunteers to help 600 people with lower incomes file their taxes. Wednesday they were sent home.
Other cuts are raising concerns at local food pantries.
"We have about 250,000 of our neighbors that are food insecure. About 82,000 are kids," CEO of Freestore Foodbank Kurt Reiber said.
Freestore Foodbank served 47 million meals last year and expects to serve more in 2025.
Last month the USDA cut two programs that gave foodbanks crucial money to buy from local farms. Freestore says making up the cost will be a challenge but they're hoping the Ohio Statehouse and Congress sends more funding in other areas.
"Our biggest focus right now, quite honestly is the farm bill," Reiber said. "We know that the farm bill has always been addressed by a bipartisan team and we hope that that's going to continue to be the case."
Lighthouse is also closely monitoring the congressional budget, where a large portion of their funding comes from. They told 바카라게임 they don't anticipate any direct cuts at this time.
