Thrift-store shopping is more popular than ever: Up to 18 percent of Americans regularly purchase goods from thrift shops, according to the Association of Resale Professionals—that's nearly as many as the 21 percent who frequent major department stores. And while pre-owned merchandise is sold for a fraction of its retail value, longtime Goodwill shoppers couldn't help but notice that as the chain's customer base expanded, so did its prices. Many have accused the organization of becoming greedy in recent years. In response, one Goodwill chapter (the stores are independently operated) has opened a concept store that's more like the Goodwill of days gone by. Goodwill Industries of the Valleys in Roanoke, Virginia, is currently testing Simply Goodwill, which opened in August 2017, according to Forbes. "We have a core group of shoppers who have expressed that they missed the Goodwill that they remember from the past," Kelly Sandridge, vice president, marketing and public relations, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, told Forbes. Simply Goodwill isn't as organized as a traditional outpost. Items are assigned standard prices according to category, without individual pricetags, meaning shoppers have to dig through racks of similar items. "The store offers lower prices, which we are able to accomplish because we do not have the labor associated with sizing, tagging and sorting by color," said Sandridge. While standard Goodwill locations offer children's clothes starting at $1.99, and adult clothes at $3.79 and up, at Simply Goodwill, children's apparel starts at $1.00, and adult clothing starts at $2.75."If it continues to be well-received, we will look to potentially replicate it in other areas of our territory," said Sandridge. Whether other Goodwill chapters around the country adopt the same format will be up to their respective leadership, she said.(h/t Forbes)
