HBO orders pilot for 'Game of Thrones' spinoff

There have been rumblings about "Game of Thrones" spinoffs since 2016, but aside from the news that HBO has five potential prequel series in the works, there's been little concrete information about these additional Westerosi tales. That changed on Friday, though, when HBO confirmed that it had ordered a pilot for one of the prequel series. According to a statement from the network, the pilot will take place "thousands of years before" the events of the current "Game of Thrones" series. "The series chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour," the statement continued. "And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros's history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend...it's not the story we think we know." Unfortunately, the statement offered no hints as to when said pilot might air, but the Drowned God doesn't give with two hands. Anyway, the story for the pilot was written by "A Song of Ice and Fire" mastermind George R.R. Martin with Jane Goldman, writer of the "Kingsman" movies and the film adaptation of "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children." Fans can only speculate as to what obscure "ASOIAF" characters might end up in the show, but GRRM has said that the prequels will not involve Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon V, the protagonists of his "Tales of Dunk and Egg" novellas (which makes sense, because those stories take place much closer in time to the current TV series).
