Former NKY family waiting out Hurricane Irma in Central Florida

Highways are jam-packed, many unable to evacuate

The Townsend family is staying put as Hurricane Irma is expected to make landfall this weekend in Florida. "The governor requested those that were not under the mandatory evacuation, if you don't have to be on the roads, he asked us to stay off, so many folks are staying back," Jill Townsend said. Jill, Rick and 9-year-old Kaelan Townsend moved to Viera, Florida, from Erlanger this summer. Viera is about 50 miles southeast of Orlando along the Central Florida coast. Wednesday the Townsends were planning to evacuate but as weather models have changed so have their plans. "I would never do anything to put my family in harm's way," Rick Townsend said. "As things developed and we were able to see the storm downgrading a little bit as it was going to approach us, it definitely reassured us that we were going to be safe." The Townsends will wait out the storm at a friend's house about 15 miles inland. "They have a newer home and ever since Hurricane Andrew that everyone knows about, they changed a lot of the building codes in Florida so that the coastal areas and the inter-coastal areas have to be up to code to withstand very high hurricane strength winds," Jill Townsend said. The Townsends told 바카라게임 the home they will be staying in was built to withstand hurricane winds up to 120 miles per hour. "By the time the storm gets up to where we are, the forecast at the moment, it says that it will be around 75 to 100 miles per hour wind range so we should be safe where we are," Jill Townsend said. Rick spent the entire week boarding up and protecting the family's condo and they have stashed away their valuables to protect them from any damage. "I think everything is going to be OK because my parents are with me and they're going to help me. They're going to help do what they have to do to keep me safe," Kaelan Townsend said.
