A flying saucer landmark isn't the only space-themed attraction located in Mars, Pennsylvania, but it's definitely one of the town's most famous ones.
Built by a resident in the 1990s out of two oil tanks, Mars' flying saucer landmark weighs nearly 3,000 pounds and is located directly in the town's square. Often painted gray, the flying saucer has been decorated with bright colors and designs in the past to look even more like a UFO.
But this science-fiction phenomenon isn't the only thing extraterrestrial about the town of Mars. Many of its local businesses are named after the red planet, like the Mars Bank and the Mars Supermarket. Residents even call themselves "martians."
President of the Mars Historical Society, John Watson, says the town also celebrates the red planet's orbit around the sun every two years by hosting a festival involving NASA.
