- Everybody's got a Filson story. Our customer testimonials talk about how Filson gear has helped them to survive hypothermia, people who were in plane crashes up in Alaska, and that their Filson coat is what kept them alive and warm for two days. When people ask me about Filson, what I see is that it was and always has been a workwear brand. It was a company that created products to outfit folks who are working in the forestry industry from Northern California all the way through British Columbia. We really think about the function, the end use, the purpose, and that almost surpasses style. The style is the byproduct of gear and goods that are really made to work in the outdoors. One of our hallmarks, really, is our luggage, our bags that we've been making for decades. - What is it that makes a Filson bag? It's not these crazy color schemes or something new and shiny. The hallmark of a classic Filson product is the simplicity. It's almost like less is more, and I think that's why they have longevity. For example, Filson is known for its leather. So let me focus on that and give you a product that's gonna last over time. So this is really where it all starts. The fabric's very expensive for good reason because it's the best out there. This whole process here is us laying it out, cutting it into the pieces that it needs to be in order to produce and make that design. In this case, our duffel bag. - What's great about having manufacturing in our headquarters is that we have our eyes on the process from raw materials coming in to the sewers, the manufacturers, and then we can even see how it ends up on the floor and how customers respond to it. I feel very committed to preserving that heritage and that tradition of American manufacturing here in Seattle. When you walk into the building, first thing you see is Filson manufacturing, where we've been producing items like the Mackinaw Cruiser for over a century. - The Mackinaw Cruiser is one of our legacy styles. This style we've been making for a very, very long time and not much has changed from the original designs and construction of this jacket. The design was originally patented in 1914 and it was made for the forestry industry. This style has, what you can see, is a map pocket because it was designed for surveyors. This pocket itself travels all the way across the back of the jacket, so that the map, which is too large to put in any pocket, slides through and it stays there behind them. Many of the elements to this jacket also are very purpose-driven. So it's been functional for its use and hasn't changed as well. - Filson's a brand that's always been on my radar. It was a brand that I grew up with and working in the apparel industry on the East Coast, Filson was always one of those brands that I kind of revered throughout my experience in the industry. I had the chance to come out here in 2014 and I hopped on the opportunity. Over the past 124 years, we've maintained a core sensibility of quality, durability. I love that there's just a core of the brand that is monolithic, it doesn't change. It's something that people can always rely on and it sort of blows in the face of trend and it's just a real, solid brand that I think has every possibility of being here for another century.
