A controversial bill nicknamed the "Don't Say Gay" bill has passed the Florida Senate and now heads to Gov. Ron DeSantis' desk for signing. House bill 1557 received 22 yays and 17 nays. DeSantis has indicated he will sign the bill into law. If he does so, it will go into effect July 1. The highly-anticipated vote came after two days of passionate debate. The bill would ban teaching about sexual orientation or gender identity until after third grade. It also requires school districts to have procedures to notify parents if there's a change in a child's mental, emotional or physical health.A parent could sue a district for violations.Critics worry it would silence students. Sen. Randolph Bracy said. The bill passed the Florida House a couple of weeks ago. The votes were mainly along party lines, with 69 for, 47 against and three not voting.
