David Szeremet has been running for 40 years, competing in over 50 marathons across the United States. For nearly 15 of those years, Szeremet has also participated as a pace runner for the Flying Pig Marathon here in Cincinnati. However, it all almost came crashing down after he was diagnosed with endocarditis and underwent his first of two open-heart surgeries just over a year ago."For the first time in my running life, I've been running for over 40 years, I had doubts about, will I be able to come back from this?" said David Szeremet. After a nearly five-hour surgery to replace his aortic valve, Szeremet said it was not only a physical setback but a mental one as well. He said at first it was a struggle to even walk a lap around a section of the hospital where he was recovering. In his mind, he didn't believe it was possible to get back into the same type of shape he was in to run marathons ever again. However, Szeremet said that the intensive care unit staff and nurses at St. Elizabeth Hospital helped him every day to get better and helped him mentally as well."The team was so great here that they supported me all the way through, not only physically, but emotionally," said Szeremet.Szerememt went on to run in the Columbus Half-Marathon, and to show his appreciation for the team at St. Elizabeth Hospital, he gave them the numbered bib he wore from the race. "Out of 152, in my division, I was eighth. So what that says is the work you guys did. You know you didn't just get me back in the game, you got me back in the competitive game again," said Szeremet.Just a few weeks ago, Szeremet was back in the hospital undergoing another surgery to replace his mitral valve. For days after this second surgery, he had to wear a buddy belt to walk around the hospital, but just two weeks later, he walked five miles on the Loveland trail. "Hopefully, other patients here can see it and realize, hey, this guy can do it, I can do it. You know, and anybody can have the spirit to recover and to thrive," said Szeremet.Szeremet won't be able to run in the Flying Pig this year, but he is planning to be back for it in 2026. You will still be able to find him this year, cheering on runners along the course.
