A team of researchers in Montana have discovered the most complete young Tyrannosaurus rex fossil yet discovered. The paleontologists, from the University of Kansas, found the specimens in Hell Creek, an area known for its plethora of fossils.
The T. rex skeleton is in amazing condition, with all of its 2-inch teeth intact. The size indicates this dinosaur was probably young, 6 to 8 years old. It was likely about 17 feet long, and at this point in its life, the young dinosaur was putting on an incredible 1 to 3 pounds per day.
Kyle Atkins-Weltman, an assistant fossil preparator at KU, told :
"By the time they were 4 years old, they were the size of some of the largest land predators that are around today. It's literally hard to fathom an animal growing this fast because there's really nothing quite like it in the modern world."
The team is still working to remove the fossil from the rock. So far, the scientists have recovered its upper jawbones with teeth intact, and part of its foot, hips, backbones and skull.
Only five young T. rex fossils have been recovered in Hell Creek over the last 100 years.
"This is probably the most preserved and most complete," Atkins-Weltman said. "This is a 1 in 100 million specimen."
