Cold case cracked: Maine authorities make arrest in 1984 murder of Linda Maxwell
Maine State Police officials announced Thursday they arrested a man in connection with a cold-case murder that happened more than 40 years ago.
Raymond Brown, 65, of Bangor, was taken into custody at about 4:15 p.m. following a traffic stop on Broadway in Bangor, police said.
Brown, formerly of Pembroke, was charged with the 1984 murder of 18-year-old Linda Maxwell through an indictment from a Washington County grand jury.
Police said Maxwell was last seen in the Calais area on Aug. 23, 1984, after spending the evening with friends. Two days later, Maxwell's body was recovered along the shoreline of the St. Croix River in Robbinston. Despite an extensive investigation at the time, the case remained unsolved for four decades.
The grand jury returned the indictment charging Brown with murder following an extensive and expanded investigation by detectives from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit - Unsolved, MSP Major Crimes Unit - North, and the Maine Attorney General's Office.
Police said Brown will be transported to the Washington County Jail, where he will be held without bail.
