Archives: Fans take in Home Run Derby at Great American Ball Park
Monday night, history was made in Major League Baseball's Home Run Derby.
Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the 2023 edition, etching his name in history alongside his father, Vladimir Guerrero, becoming the first father-son duo to ever win a derby.
Guerrero Sr.'s win came in 2007 in San Francisco.
Eight years ago, along the banks of the Ohio River, history was also made when Great American Ball Park played host to the 2015 edition of the derby, as part of All-Star Week in Cincinnati.
Reds third baseman Todd Frazier put on a show for his hometown crowd, crushing 39 home runs in his three rounds to win the 2015 title.
In doing so, Frazier became the first player since 1990 to win a Home Run Derby in his own stadium (Chicago Cubs' second baseman Ryne Sandberg). Since Frazier, it's only happened once more, when then-Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper took home the crown in the nation's capital in 2018.
However, Frazier's win wasn't the only history made on the GABP field that night. 2015 marked the first time a new, and still current, derby format was used, where each player's round was determined by time rather than outs, and a head-to-head bracket format was introduced instead of taking the top home run hitters to advance in each subsequent round.
The threat of poor weather also introduced more changes, with a shorter time limit (four minutes instead of five) and a revamped bonus time were implemented.
Between a new format, a star-studded field and a hometown champ, Reds fans flocked to GABP to be part of a special night, including one gentleman who caught a ball in an unusual way.
