With a fifth baby on the way, Chip and Joanna Gaines couldn't be happier, but it wasn't so long ago included just two. The HGTV stars had sidestepped a series of missed connections (they both attended Baylor University, but never met) and dating snafus (he showed up over an hour late to the first date — and !) to become the beloved couple they are today.

The former first met in 2001, when Joanna worked behind the counter at her dad's tire shop. She had appeared on the store's , and Chip admitted to frequenting the Firestone franchise until he finally got the chance to try his pick-up line on her: "Hey, you're the girl from the commercials."

Punctuality aside, the first date went swimmingly, but Chip waited as long as possible to meet up again because of a bet with a roommate. "I'd made a bet with John to see who could hold out the longest before calling our dates back," Chip writes in . "I really wanted that fifty dollars from John! That's the only reason I didn't call."

After that, the duo hit it off, and it was only a matter of months until Chip popped the question. With their 15th anniversary on the horizon, here's everything we know about their big day:

Chip proposed at a shopping center.

He told Joanna they were headed to a concert four hours away, but brought her to a jewelry store in Archer City, Texas, instead. After he bent down on one knee (and she said yes!), they went inside so she could : a round diamond in an antique-looking platinum setting.

She never wants to upgrade her ring.

Years later, Chip offered Joanna the chance to swap out her stone for a bigger gem, but she was having none of it. "It wasn't a 'perfect' diamond, but it was perfect for me," she wrote in . "To me, my ring is part of our story."

They got married in Waco.

The couple chose the historic as the venue for their May 31, 2003, ceremony. , the Greek Revival home "looks an awful lot like the place we had our first date."

Joanna wore a strapless dress.

She's more likely to sport a gray t-shirt or blue button-down now, but as a bride Joanna went for a glam ball gown with ruching at the waist.

And she accessorized it with a tiara.

Carrying a big bouquet of red roses (no succulents yet!), Joanna opted for a crown to hold her veil and low bun in place, with a simple necklace and earrings completing the look.

They went to New York for their honeymoon.

A few years later, they after the hotel where they stayed. Unfortunately developers demolished this historic building in 2006.

And started fixing up homes soon after.

Not long after the couple tied the knot, they started on their first renovation together: their own home. "It was dumpy and it smelled bad," Joanna remembered on ." To this day, if you ask us what our favorite house we ever lived in we both go back to this little white 800 sq ft home."
