Butler County approves contract for jail to hold ICE detainees again
Butler County commissioners have approved a contract for the county jail to once again hold ICE detainees.
During Tuesday's meeting, commissioners approved an amendment to the contract with the U.S. Department of Justice United States Marshals Service to incorporate ICE detainees.
It's set to go into effect March 5.
The change comes years after the Butler County Sheriff's Office ended its relationship with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In 2021, Sheriff Richard K. Jones stated he will no longer be accepting ICE detainees at the Butler County Jail, ending his contract to house the ICE detainees over the Biden administration regulations.
Before that, the Butler County Sheriff's Office had been under a contract with the Department of Homeland Security and ICE to house the detainees while they await immigration hearings since 2003.
After President Donald Trump was elected in November, Jones said he was "ready to answer that call" again.
