129th Boston Marathon finish line stories: Marriage proposal, family reunions and more
At the family reunification center, runners reunited with loved ones after running over 26 miles in the 129th Boston Marathon.
Abby Dubel was brought to tears when she crossed the finish line on Boylston Street, but she had no idea that another surprise was waiting for her nearby. Her boyfriend, Kyle Jones, dropped down on one knee and proposed after she collected her medal.
"Ever since I've known her, she's always wanted to do the Boston Marathon," Jones said. "I was just thinking, you know, her family is going to be here. My family is. All of her closest friends. And it'd be a beautiful culmination of all that."
"This is the greatest surprise that I ever could have had at the end, so thank you for putting this all together with all of our family," Dubel said.
Runners like friends and mothers of five, Cherie Hansen and Bethany Tops, met at the reunification center to celebrate with proud family and friends.
"It's been like a dream come true, it's been an incredible experience," Tops said. "I hit a bit of a mental funk, and I was looking for something to help me pull out of it, and I thought to run a marathon."
One runner, who ran the marathon with his son, said he wanted to stop the marathon at one point, but ended up calling his family and also used another little trick to get him through.
"My son said you got this old man. I drank some pickle juice at the top of the hill, and after that I felt great, down I went," he said.

Runner Jeff English from Canada said he beat his personal best by 30 seconds and thought the marathon was a one-of-a-kind experience.
His wife, Veronica, said she took the T to meet English at the finish line, but was a little late getting to see him cross.
"The train was just a little late," Veronica said.
