Blue Moon creator making a marijuana-infused 'beer'
The creator of Blue Moon is working on a marijuana-infused "beer."
reports that instead of being brewed with alcohol, the drink will be infused with "special marijuana formulas" designed to mimic the effects of drinking a normal beer.
The chilled drinks will initially only be available in Colorado.
"This is really about brewing great beers that beer drinkers love," said Keith Villa, who developed Blue Moon Belgian Wheat. "You'd just swap out an alcoholic beer for one of our beers."
Some companies offer cannabis beer, but they all lack THC and are instead infused with hemp extract to give them a marijuana taste.
Federal law prohibits brewers from using marijuana in their beers. Villa's beer avoids the federal ban because it lacks alcohol.
Villa plans to eventually expand distribution of his "marijuana beer" to stores in states where pot is legal for recreational use. Marijuana is still illegal at a federal level.
The goal is to have the marijuana-infused beer come in three selections: a light beer, a wheat beer and something heavier, like an Imperial or barrel-aged stout.
