"Mary Poppins Returns"
There's something about Mary. A full 54 years after the original came out, Emily Blunt is ready to pick up her umbrella and bottomless bag to go check back in on the Banks children. If you're worried about trying to recreate a classic, don't worry. This isn't a remake of "Mary Poppins." That story has been told already. Think of this as more of a necessary check-in, you know ... a half-century later.
"If Beale Street Could Talk"
Directed by Academy Award-winner Barry Jenkins, "If Beale Street Could Talk" is already in the awards discussion. Pair that with the performances of Stephan James ("Homecoming") and the incomparable Regina King, this novel-to-screen adaptation set in 1970s Harlem is absolutely worth your time.
"Aquaman"
DC Comics has had a tough run against the mega giant that is Marvel, but if anyone can flip the script, it appears that it's "Aquaman." Led by Jason Mamoa, the underwater superhero tale has been in the works for quite some time, and the best news of all: it turns out that Julie Andrews is playing a character described as the "most powerful" force in the world. Sounds right.
"Welcome to Marwen"
Steve Carrell is having quite a year but between "Beautiful Boy" and "Welcome to Marwen," we'd recommend checking this one out. Playing a victim of neo-Nazi hate crimes, Carrell turns out a brave performance as a man who's created his own world shaped by dolls, influenced by the women in his life, helping him to find the strength to be who he was before the attack.
"Second Act"
Leah Remini, Milo Ventimiglia and Jennifer Lopez in one movie about a woman faking her background to make a professional move up in the world is certainly something we'd wanna see. If your guilty pleasure is stories of women in midlife finding a renewed purpose then have at "Second Act."
"American Renegades"
Starring J.K. Simmons, "American Renegades" follows a group of Navy SEALS in Europe who discover a fortune at the bottom of a lake. Instead of doing the job they were sent into do, they go a bit rogue and try to recover the chest of gold on their own.
"Vice"
"Vice" is the political Oscar contender of the year and one of the latest releases into this year's race. Following former Vice President Dick Cheney's historically controversial tenure in office, the all-star cast features Christian Bale as Cheney, Amy Adams as his wife Lynne, Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush and a lot of prosthetic makeup.
"Holmes & Watson"
John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell reunite in this revamp of Sherlock Holmes but this time it's more absurd than you've ever seen it before. Exactly what you think Reilly and Ferrell might turn out. Expect nothing less than anachronistic nonsense from the Talladega Nights duo.
"Destroyer"
The Nicole Kidman-led "Destroyer" looks dark, but Kidman is at her best when she's gritty, broken and unhinged. Dredging up an undercover assignment from her past, a police detective tries to make peace on a case that's haunted her through most of her life.
"On the Basis of Sex"
Ever wonder how the icon that is Ruth Bader Ginsberg came to be? "On The Basis of Sex" aims to answer that question for you. Essentially a superhero origin story, the Felicity Jones-led film shows how Ginsberg broke onto the legal scene and became the trailblazer that she has been in the modern-day legal system.
