'Knew I was home': Golden officially introduced as Bengals new defensive coordinator
The newest defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals is officially being introduced on Monday.
Al Golden is returning to the Jungle, this time as defensive coordinator, taking over a unit that has been Lou Anarumo's since the 2019 season.
You can watch Golden's full introductory press conference below.
"There's only 32 of these," Golden said when asked why he wanted to return to the Bengals after a successful stint in the college ranks, at Notre Dame. "There's even less that have Joe Burrow."
The 55-year-old Golden has previous experience with the Bengals, coaching the team바카라 게임 웹사이트s linebackers during the 2020 and 2021 seasons under head coach Zac Taylor.
In February of 2022, Golden took the job with Notre Dame, where he coached a defensive unit that allowed the fifth fewest points per game in the nation this season.
"Just working with Al the way we did, we had a high opinion of him," Taylor said. "Watching what he did at Notre Dame the last few years, we knew he could come in and hit the ground running."
Cincinnati allowed 30 or more points in six games in 2024 season, all coming before the Bengals' five-game winning streak to end the season.
In addition, the Bengals allowed the eighth-most total yards this season (5,921), an average of 348.2 yards per game.
Under Golden, the Fighting Irish scoring defense improved each year. After finishing 39th nationally in 2022 (23.0 points per game), Notre Dame finished seventh (15.9) and fifth (15.5) in each of the last two years.
Golden helmed a defense that made it all the way to the College Football Playoff championship game this past season.
"We don't live in the gray," Golden said about how he plans to replicate that defensive success in the NFL with the Bengals. "We are going to play empowered. There has to be trust there. At some point, you have to turn the keys over to the players.
Before fully turning his attention on the future, Golden thanked ND head coach Marcus Freeman for his three years in South Bend.
"Exhausting and emotional," Golden said of the last week. "I had the opportunity to sit down with all of my players, Coach Freeman encouraged it."
But, Golden says the move to re-join Cincinnati's staff was the right one immediately.
"I made that turn off 74, saw the stadium, and knew I was home."
A former Penn State tight end, Golden has extensive coaching experience, including two stints as a college head coach with Temple and Miami.
It took several seasons for Golden to find success at Temple, though he won 17 games over his final two seasons in 2009-10, parlaying that success into landing the Miami job.
Golden put together two winning seasons while leading the Hurricanes, though he was dismissed about halfway through the 2015 season.
In between his time at Miami and joining the Bengals바카라 게임 웹사이트 staff in 2020, Golden coached tight ends for the Detroit Lions from 2016-19.
