Some at-home COVID-19 test kit expiration dates extended
At-home COVID-19 tests are good to have on hand as viruses are spreading.
It's also important to know if the tests are still accurate.
You're encouraged to check the expiration or use-by date. But even if that date has passed, don't be too quick to throw it out.
"The test is made, and they put an expiration date on it. They get more data about its stability as far as expiration is concerned," said Dr. Mohammad Ali, with Penn State Health.
If product tests later prove the shelf life is longer than originally printed, the manufacturer can request the Food and Drug Administration approve an extended expiration date.
About half of the at-home COVID-19 tests approved by the FDA have an extended expiration date.
"They [at-home tests] are extremely useful, especially if you have symptoms or if you are going to meet somebody or a large group where there are people who can get severe infection," Ali said.
"We strongly encourage home testing," said Dr. John Goldman with UPMC.
But Goldman said if the test's expiration date has passed and the FDA has not extended it, don't rely on it.
"Usually, the tests lose their sensitivity. They give you false negatives more frequently," he said.
If you bought a test directly from the vendor, it may send a message with a new expiration date. But if you bought a test from a third-party vendor, like a drug store, you need to check for yourself.
